It’s not just the super-rich who should consider bespoke insurance for their high value homes. If you’re not quite sure whether to use specialist insurance broker or head to a price comparison site, here’s what to ask yourself…
Do you own property that would cost over £250,000 to rebuild?
If any property you own (including holiday or overseas homes) has a high-rebuild cost it’s worth getting a specialist insurance policy. Older homes and listed buildings are especially important to think about. If you’re not sure how much your home would cost to rebuild you can organise a surveyor to assess it or use the Building Cost Information Service provided by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
Is anything you own worth over £10,000?
Even if it’s just a single valuable item – perhaps an engagement ring or an heirloom painting – for your peace of mind, you should have it properly valued and insured. A standard home insurance policy may not give you the cover you need.
Do you own fine art, antiques or collectables?
An insurance expert can help you to find the right cover for some of the most unusual valuables. Almost as importantly, their specialist knowledge can help you to obtain cover to protect your treasures from everything from theft to humidity. They can even put you in touch with restorers and craftspeople.
