Don’t let car theft ruin your festive season

Watch out for car theft

Unfortunately over recent months there has been an increase in the theft of high value and keyless vehicles. Organised gangs are gaining access to the vehicle’s On Board Diagnostic Unit using sophisticated technology which compromises the vehicle security and enables the car to be stolen without a key.

You can be proactive to help reduce the chance of becoming a victim of vehicle theft, to help you do this Alasdair Hogarth, a Client Manager at Aon Private Clients, has suggested some simple steps you can take:

Park your vehicle somewhere safe

Make sure that you park your vehicle in a safe place. Ideally you should keep your vehicle in your garage if you have one; sometimes policies require garaging on certain vehicles which must be adhered to. If you are away from home you should pick somewhere which is CCTV monitored or has a manned car park, if none of these options are available then leave your vehicle in an area which is well lit. Use all physical security measures which are available to you i.e. if you have lockable gates on your drive then make sure they are locked.

Immobilise your car

Use a steering wheel lock. Physical devices will act as a deterrent to potential thieves as well as make it harder for them to steal the vehicle.

Look into purchasing a tracker

By having a tracker added to your vehicle’s security it will greatly increase the chance of recovery if the vehicle is stolen. Do your research into which tracker is best for you, some don’t work underground whereas some will alert you the minute your car has been tampered with. Your insurance broker or insurer should be able to provide further information on the different levels of trackers available. Certain vehicles, depending on the type or value, require trackers to be fitted anyway for insurance purposes.

Unfortunately, the worst often happens when you are least expecting it. By taking some of these steps you should have peace of mind that you have been proactive in making it harder for thieves to target your vehicle.
